But it was clear that Comcast was serving the neighborhood, so he called the cable company to find out if he could get Internet access. Comcast's online availability checker indicated-correctly, as it turned out-that the house he was buying didn't have service. There are five parcels that neighbor Zbrozek's property, and three of them have Comcast service, he said. ![]() The technician came out and left a note saying that service was not available," he told us. After moving in, I called to buy service. "Before I bought my home, I checked with Comcast-by phone-to see if service was available at the address. Zbrozek described his experience to Ars in a phone interview and in emails. Zbrozek's experience with Comcast led to him getting involved with LAHCF and organizing an expansion that brought 10Gbps symmetrical fiber to his house and others on nearby roads. Town residents were able to form the ISP with the help of Next Level Networks, which isn't a traditional consumer broadband provider but a company that builds and manages networks for local groups. Today, Zbrozek is on the board of a co-op ISP called Los Altos Hills Community Fiber (LAHCF), which provides multi-gigabit fiber Internet to dozens of homes and has a plan to serve hundreds more. But after moving in December 2019, Zbrozek says he learned that Comcast never wired his house-despite previously telling him it could offer Internet service at the address. Comcast may be more competitive, but it won't always have the fastest options.Sasha Zbrozek lives in Los Altos Hills, California, which he describes as "a wealthy Silicon Valley town," in a house about five miles from Google's headquarters. AT&T is deploying 2Gbps and 5Gbps fiber to dozens of urban areas, and Google Fiber will soon provide 8Gbps service on top of restarting expansion. The challenge, of course, is that rivals aren't sitting idle. These upgrades aren't dramatic in most cases, but they could make a difference at the lower end by enabling higher-quality streaming and better service for multi-person households. ![]() The telecom hopes to cover over 50 million homes and offices with 2Gbps by the end of 2025, and plans to offer "10G" and next-gen DOCSIS 4.0 service in the future. Comcast is in the midst of deploying 2Gbps service to more states, and in some cases offers 6Gbps access. Xfinity is one of the largest internet service providers in the United States, offering a range of services to customers in 40 states across the country. ![]() The flagship Gigabit Extra/x2 plan still peaks at 1.2Gbps for many customers. ![]() And you no longer need Comcast's absolute best plans to cross the gigabit threshold - Extreme Pro and Ultrafast (now Gigabit) customers have upgraded from 900Mbps to 1Gbps. Performance Pro/Fast service is increasing from 300Mbps to 400Mbps, while Blast/Superfast users will get 800Mbps instead of the previous 600Mbps. The entry-level Performance Starter (aka Connect) plan is bumping up from 50Mbps to 75Mbps, while the biggest relative gains come to regular Performance (Connect More) customers climbing from 100Mbps to 200Mbps. The cable giant is increasing speeds for most of its Xfinity tiers across the US. Comcast's recent speed upgrades now extend beyond the high end. ![]()
