2/25/2023 0 Comments Zero time dilemma cryptext![]() Any ancillary characters involved in the main characters' backstories Monty Hall (literally just included for a puzzle one what's probably the most pointless fragment in the game) You could argue that it's the inspiration for the game's setup with the coin flip and everything but it doesn't matter nearly as much as VLR's prisoner dilemma or 999's rat maze The Sleeping Beauty paradox (I was so excited about this one because I thought the reason radical-6's outbreak was inevitable was because Zero would always restart the game when they completed it without releasing the virus). ZTD brings up so many plot points that go nowhere: I loved that in 999 and VLR because it always tied into the plot at the end. The best example of the bad writing to me is all the pseudoscience babble. I think C-Team was by far the worst written and always had a noticeable dip in quality, though that's not to say the other teams didn't have their problems I wonder how others have felt about the game's writing. I had such a hype built up for the game and I tried to redeem the game in my eyes, but even as I play through ZE:VR again now I instantly notice the difference in the quality of writing. I was one of enthusiastic fans of the series and followed its progress though the difficult time after ZE's commercial failure and the botched plan for the sequel for a long time. That, I hope is not a completely biased opinion since I have no reason to have a bias. Mind you, the game is still decent and the plots are quite good, but the writing is nowhere near Uchikoshi's usual standard shown in Ever 17, 999, and Zero Escape. I think it's a bit of both given the state of the writing in the game, or perhaps someone else wrote in his place and he was responsible for other parts of the game. Personally, I think something went horribly wrong during the translation or Uchikoshi was pressed for time and started developing the game with his initial script that was not developed much from his rough draft. Almost every dialogue is either cheesy, unnatural or awkward. I've seen some new players to the series who haven't played previous titles calling the horrible writing out and I completely agree. I fondly remember Junpei/Akane's flirts as being somewhat cute in 999 but ZE:ZTD lost all its previous title's refinedness and subtlety. You don't talk like that and you certainly don't start reminiscing and telling your past trauma all of sudden without a cause, totally out of context.ĭialogues feel like the author feeding information down the player's throat rather than a natural conversation and the way it's presented feels almost always awkward, especially when it comes to romances. I really can't give a 'proof' for my claim as it is in a subjective area and I'm not well versed in English enough to use technical terms to pinpoint problems, but the way character converse feels very unnatural that's not how people speak in real life or even in anime. ZE:ZTD's plots are not as good as previous two titles but that is not what's troubling me what really troubles me is that its writing is not just worse compared to the previous two titles it's almost as if a completely different person wrote the script. I still think 999 and ZE:VR have one of the greatest stories ever told in video games and it was only possible because Uchikoshi's complex plots were supported by decent writing. I can't believe I'm saying this to my once favourite video game writer, but the writing is terrible in this game, especially how characters talk to each other and reminisce to give an account of their past in the most awkward manner possible. When I first started playing I was instantly put off the game by the odd dialogues and conversations. Jump freely between events and characters to piece together the fractured narrative and unlock multiple endings.Ĭharacters from the award-winning Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue’s Last Reward are joined by a new cast of participants to bring first-time players up to speed and conclude the series for longtime fans.I completely finished the game more than a month ago, but I was utterly disappointed by the underwhelming writing that I couldn't muster any interest to write about it back then.
